In Greek mythology, Galatea was one of the 50 nerieides - sea nymphs - beautiful goddess of calm seas and milky white froth of the waters. She was the subject of the sculptor Pygmalian's carved ivory statue. He fell in love with his sculpture and begged the gods to give her life, which they granted.
Wishing you calm seas and smooth sailing in 2021

Referencing a 1920s photo of Isadora Duncan, mother of modern dance. She ripped off the tight bodices and point shoes of classical ballet and danced in bare feet, grecian gowns and freedom. The antlers? Well.. I like them. And they were given to me to use.
She stands a mighty 7' tall.

'VIRTUE' $2,800cad Exibited Nov 24 - Dec 17 2021 at Esquimalt Gallery Splash!
Full-size female form. 3d wire sculpture wall hanging. Interior or exterior installation. Painted, galvanized chicken wire.
I was inspired to do this one initially by the pose in Andrew Wyeth's painting "Christina's World". I love the twist in her back. As I was working on her, I was listening to "Hell Cats", a rollicking good tale of the adventures of Anne Bonny and her good friend Mary Read, the infamous lady pirates of the Caribbean in the 1720s. Arrrrrrgh. So she morphed somewhat into Anne Bonny, lying on the beach, looking out to sea. The name of the ship they co-captained was the 'Virtue'

'PERSEPHONE'
SOLD Commercial building in Florida
Full size female form. 3d wire sculpture wall hanging. Interior or exterior installation. Painted, galvanized chicken wire.
Depicting Persephone, the beautiful Greek goddess who was whisked away to the underworld by Hades. Her mother, Demeter, goddess of fertility, farming, and vegetation, missed her daughter so much that she caused a famine on the land. Hades relented and permitted Persephone to return to the upper world but before leaving he tricked her into eating 6 pomegranate seeds. This ensured her return to Hades for 6 months of the year. When Persephone arrives back on the land, it's spring and she stays for 6 months of warmth and growth, then returns to Hades leaving us with the winter months.
Persephone is shown here with her pomegranate, 6 pomegranate seeds in her crown and a rose at her hip. Longing for spring. She is associated with fertility, rebirth and regeneration of flowers.

GAZE' $2,400cad

'CIRCE' $2,600cad
One of my greatest pleasures is listening to a good audiobook while working with my hands. Finding the right book can be a touch and go effort but with Madeline Miller's book 'CIRCE' I was able to dive right in. Beautifully narrated, it is the retelling of some of the story of the Odyssey from the perspective of one of Odysseus's lovers, Circe. Daughter of the sun god Helios and a nymph Perses, she stands apart from the gods with a mortal's sense of empathy. Best known for transforming a shipload of men into swine after they misbehave as guests, she leads an independent life on her island with her pet wolves and lions. She is shown here with her pouch of herbs and potions, a crown of waves, a snake around her wrist, and her wand/spear. Her hair and dress billowing around her, she sits at the edge of the sea, watching for ships.

"Jump" 7' x 6'-6" x 36" SOLD private collection Montreal
Installed in an interior open stairwell

"Bread and Roses" 68" x 36" x 48" SOLD
Commission piece - private collection - Vancouver Island
I had some fun with this one. It was commissioned by labour organizer who fought for equal pay in the unions for women back in the 80s and 90s. The sculpture is in recognition of an era of a movement of special women, the feminist activists of the 80’s and 90’s, and to the many women that have been influential in his life. I've embedded a number of symbols. She's looking to the left and has her weight on the left foot (his leftist politics). She has a 'Rosie the Riveter' headband on. Her belt is embroidered with a sheaf of wheat and roses (the suffragette anthem 'Bread and Roses') She has a money pouch on her belt (financial independence) and she's holding a gazing ball (she's got the whole world in her hand)
